SCROLL

Do You Have Any of the Following Concerns or Symptoms?

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms or concerns?
If you do, you might be suffering from an inguinal hernia.

– A puffy lump appears around your groin.
– There is some discomfort in the lower abdomen.
– There’s a pulling sensation on internal organs.
– When pressed with a finger or while lying down, the lump retracts.
– Originally, there was only a lump on the groin, but recently it has spread to the scrotum.

Swelling in the Groin is a Symptom of an Inguinal Hernia

An inguinal hernia is a weakening of the fascia in the groin which results in organs such as the intestines and fat passing through gaps in muscles and under the skin.

In the case of adults, inguinal hernias do not heal on their own. The bulge grows larger bit by bit and will spread to the scrotum in men.
The most common symptom is swelling in the groin, but it may be accompanied by pain or discomfort.

There are 3 types of groin hernias: indirect inguinal hernias, direct inguinal hernias, and femoral hernias.
They’re distinguished by the location where the hernia occurs. Indirect inguinal hernias are more common among men and femoral hernias occur more often in women.

Life-threatening Strangulation

Strangulation is an advanced form of incarceration in which the trapped intestine is obstructed so much that necrosis occurs.

Strangulation is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention, sometimes involving emergency surgery or long hospitalizations.

If you notice symptoms of an inguinal hernia, we recommend you not leave it untreated and consult a doctor.

An inguinal hernia can only be treated with surgery.
At Shiga Otsu Inguinal Hernia Clinic surgeries to treat inguinal hernias are same-day procedures.

Minimally Invasive Single-incision Laparoscopic Surgery

手術_1200_630

There are two main types of surgery for inguinal hernias: Open Hernia Repair which makes an incision in the groin and Laparoscopic Hernia Repair which uses a laparoscope.

According to the inguinal hernia guidelines, laparoscopic surgery has many advantages, such as less post-operative pain, faster return to work and social life, less postoperative hematoma, and less chronic pain.

Our clinic treats hernias with a single-incision laparoscopic procedure that involves only one incision inside or below the navel. We provide minimally invasive treatment in a short time with less scarring.

Treatment Schedule

診療スケジュール_1200_630

A typical treatment schedule at our clinic consists of the following 5 visits.

1) First Examination Day (approx. 45 minutes – 1 hour)

After an interview, physical examination, and ultrasound examination, if you wish to have inguinal hernia surgery, we will arrange a date.
If the surgery date is within one month of the first examination day, the preoperative examination will be done on the same day.

Note: A CT scan may be required depending on the condition of the groin. Also, patients may be asked to undergo a cardiac ultrasound examination at another clinic depending on their age and history of heart disease.

2) Preoperative Explanation (approx. 30 – 45 minutes)

We will give you a detailed explanation of the preoperative examination results and surgery.

3) Surgery

Anesthesia induction takes 30 minutes, the surgery is 50 minutes (per hernia), and there is a postoperative period of about 2 hours in the recovery room.
After it is confirmed that you can eat, drink, and walk in the recovery room, you can return home. Please note that you will not be able to operate a car, motorcycle, or bicycle after the surgery.

Note: The times required for surgery, anesthesia, and recovery are based on an average patient. These times may vary depending on the general condition of the patient and condition of their inguinal hernia.

4) One Week After Surgery (approx. 10 – 15 minutes)

Please make a reservation from 4 days to 1 week after the surgery to inspect the surgical wound and groin.

5) One Month After Surgery (approx. 10 – 15 minutes)

The condition of the surgical wound and the presence of symptoms in the groin will be checked.
A risk assessment of the inguinal hernia occurring on the opposite side of the surgery will be carried out.

* Depending on the condition of the groin, we may recommend a follow-up appointment 6 months after the surgery.
* For patients under the age of 75 who do not have underlying medical conditions, if there are reasons that frequent visits are difficult, such as distance from home, it may be possible to have the Preoperative Explanation done on the first visit.
In such a case, when making an appointment for the first visit, please do so at least 2 hours before closing time (5 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday) and request the Preoperative Explanation when you book the appointment by phone or online.
